BloodCenter of Wisconsin is a multi-faceted, world-renowned organization focused on blood collection, disease testing, treatment and research. It was founded over a half century ago by the Milwaukee Junior League as a not-for-profit, community based blood bank. Virginia Brooks Jefferson was the President of the Junior League and headed the committee that funded, organized and opened BloodCenter in 1947. VShe served as the first board president and later, CEO of BloodCenter for 16 years. Since then, the organization has grown to over 750 employees and is proud to celebrate over 60 years of advancing patient care by delivering life-saving solutions grounded in unparalleled medical and scientific expertise. BloodCenter of Wisconsin is the sole provider of blood and blood products to 54 different hospitals in the state, including all community hospitals in southeastern Wisconsin. It collects and tests donations so that all patients who need blood will receive the safest product possible. The highly specialized testing and expert medical consultation provided by the Diagnostic Laboratories benefit patients in need of bone marrow or organ transplants, patients with bleeding and clotting disorders and patients with immunologic, neoplastic, or genetic diseases. BloodCenter also serves as part of the patient care team by working with hospitals and physicians to provide direct patient care. Its Medical Services and Treatment provides consultation when patients experience unusual or less than desired responses to treatment. This team also carries out a variety of transfusion procedures that can lessen disease symptoms. Finally, its Blood Research Institute (BRI) employs more than 90 scientists and technologists in the search to understand blood-related disorders, including heart disease, cancer, autoimmune disease, and sickle-cell anemia, and to translate those findings into treatments and cures. Internationally acclaimed, BloodCenter is one of only four blood centers in the world with a significant blood research program and the only blood center which receives more funding from the National Institutes of Health.
