A hurricane is about to slam Bermuda, a British overseas territory in the North Atlantic Ocean, this weekend. Tropical Storm Leslie became a hurricane on Wednesday, and it is expected to reach the island by late Saturday while severe hurricane force conditions will be experienced by Sunday Morning.

Because of this, Bermudans are urged to prepare for the worst and are told to stock up food and water before Leslie batters the island a few hours from now. Hon. Wayne Perinchief J.P., M.P. Minister of National Security, assured residents and tourists that plans are in place and all emergency services are ready for the force of Leslie.

Leslie, the sixth hurricane of the 2012 season, is already bringing deadly surf to Puerto Rico, Leeward Islands, Bahamas, Virgin Islands and the eastern seaboard of the United States.

Bermuda’s Emergency Measures Organization (EMO) revealed that schools and government offices would be closed on Friday and ferry services would be suspended on Saturday. Perinchief said “Bermuda can be confident that once the storm has passed, a well-coordinated response to critical issues is planned.”

In times of storms and other natural calamities, risk and damage reduction should not just be the priority of the people and government. We also need to have enough blood supplies at hospitals and blood banks so when somebody needs it, there will be available blood and no lives will be compromised.

Here in BloodBanker, we have been publishing storm warnings for all countries where tropical storms are headed. We urge people to donate blood ahead of time so in case storms whip our cities, there are sufficient blood products anytime, anywhere – whatever the season and weather.
