In Philippines, Typhoon Sanba continues to move northwest and is expected to depart the Philippine territory by Saturday evening or Sunday morning. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration or PAGASA said that Sanba may not make landfall in any part of the country because it will only pass over the eastern seas of Philippines. PAGASA issued no public storm signal since no other weather disturbance was seen near the Philippine territory.

But this Super Typhoon is expected to strengthen the southwest monsoon that will bring rains over Panay Islands, Negros Provinces, Palawan, Lanao del Norte, Misamis Occidental and Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.

The Philippines’ weather forecast institution advised fishing boats and other small seacraft not to sail out into the eastern seaboards of Central and Southern Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao due to strong winds caused by typhoon Sanba. Meanwhile, most of Luzon, including the country’s capital, Manila, may have a cloudy to rainy weather this weekend.

According to PAGASA, as of September 14, 2012, 11 am PST advisory, the typhoon was moving north-northwest at 15kph and is anticipated to be east of Southern Taiwan by Saturday morning. By Sunday morning, Sanba is expected to be east of Northern Taiwan and is at 220km northwest of Okinawa, Japan by Monday morning.

People should be alerted and informed for the soonest possible time by government agencies and media whenever a tropical storm is coming. This could help prevent loss of life and reduce chances of livelihood and property destruction. But may we also be reminded that in times of natural calamities, having sufficient blood supplies at hospitals and blood banks are also of extreme importance.

Here in BloodBanker, we have been publishing storm warnings for all countries where tropical storms are headed. We urge people to donate blood ahead of time so in case storms whip our cities, there are sufficient blood products anytime, anywhere – whatever the season and weather.
