ZLB recently merged or bought out Avent-bioservices in the US. However, the current bio-services locations in the US will continue to operate under the Bio-services name.

How much does the center pay per donation? Nothing

How often can one donate at the center? The body replaces plasma so healthy individuals can donate as often as twice in a seven-day period, with at least 48 hours between donations. Whole blood must be every 8 weeks, to allow time for the body to replenish.

The types of donations:
Automated Donation - removing a specific blood component, such as platelets, plasma or red blood cells, and returning the remaining components to the donor. It is more efficient because than whole blood as it allows for the collection of specific components in larger quantities.

Autologous Donation- donation of blood for your own surgery. There usually is a fee for the processing of all units drawn. This cost covers drawing the blood, testing, and delivery to the hospital, and requires a physician’s order.

Directed Donation- donation of blood for a specific patient, such as a family member or friend, with compatible blood types. There is a fee for the processing of all units drawn. Donations must occur at least two weeks prior to the scheduled surgery, and require an order from the recipient’s physician.

What tests are performed prior to signing up?
Brief medial history, this can also be done on-line for a faster first visit. On the initial visit, a physical exam is done, and vital are taken and blood iron levels are assured.
On subsequent visits, a staff member will check your vital signs and ask some questions about your health since your last donation. In addition, your hematocrit and plasma protein levels will be measured.

How long does a donation take? First one about 2 hours, after that about 1.5 hours. Whole blood is about 1 hour.

Are there any upfront costs for the potential donor to enroll in the program (startup costs)? None
