The demand for blood is high, but the supply is not enough. While organization such as Red Cross and local blood banks hold blood drives almost everywhere, the supply for blood is still insufficient simply because of the increased demand of blood products.

"Why You Should Donate Blood"

Some people have not thought of donating blood because they are too busy or nobody asked them too or they have an unhealthy fear of needles. The list of why people don’t give blood is a mile long, but it never discourages us to continue advocating until everyone realizes how important it is to donate blood.

Donating blood is not only good for those who will receive your blood, but it has also positive effects for the donor, too. Giving your blood has health and personal benefits for you.

Here are the reasons why you should donate blood.

1. Free Mini-Medical Check up. Before donating blood, donors are asked for a brief health history and tested for basic physical health. You have the chance to find out if your pulse, blood pressure, body temperature, cholesterol and hemoglobin levels and other vital signs are healthy or not. If you are found eligible to donate blood, you are allowed to give blood every 56 days, so it means that you can also get a completely free physical examination three to six times a year. Donating blood is also a fast and safe way of losing weight.

2. Decrease Cancer Risk. According to the Miller-Keystone Blood Center, donating blood regularly is associated with lowered risks for cancer including lung, colon, liver, throat and stomach cancers. So if you want to help lower your risk of cancer, donate blood regularly. Risk levels dropped in correlation with how often donors give blood.

3. Reduce Risk of Heart Attack. Donating blood also improves cardiovascular health. The Florida Blood Services reports that people who donate blood regularly over the years have an 88% lower risk of heart attack and a 33% lower risk of any severe cardiovascular event, such as stroke. Blood donation has heart-protecting benefits because by donating blood regularly, you can prevent blood from thickening too much. So when you give blood, the blood that remains in your body goes through a process called as hemodilution, making your blood diluted or thinner. This is the same process that women undergo during menstruation, which explains why pre-menopausal women have had lower rates of heart diseases compared to men in their same age group.

4. Replenish Blood. Some people worry that if they donated blood, they could lose so much blood and that it may be unhealthy for them. That’s a myth! The truth is, you are helping your body function more efficiently by letting go of some blood. This is because once you give blood, you get rid of the old red blood cells and your body produces new red blood cells that are more efficient at carrying oxygen throughout the body. Your body replaces the blood volume within 48 hours of donation, and all of the red blood cells you lose during the process are replaced within 4-8 weeks. Your blood is completely replenished, which means your body stays healthy and you perform better.

Universal Donors are people with O- blood type

5. If you’re a universal donor, the more you need to donate blood. People with O- (“read O negative”) are known as the universal donors, which means they can donate blood to people of all blood types. Only 7% of the population has O- blood type, which makes them very rare. If you are a universal donor, you owe it to the world to give your blood, knowing that there are lots of them who need yours.

6. Become a Hero. There are millions of people across the world who are in need of blood transfusions because of surgeries, car accidents, war, natural disasters and to treat illnesses like kidney and liver diseases and cancer. Whatever the reasons may be, it doesn’t change the fact that 1 pint of your blood can save three lives. Your blood can give them life and that makes you an instant hero.

7. Receive Incentives. When you donate blood, you don’t only feel good because you know you have saved lives, you can also receive incentives! Some blood drives give away t-shirts, gift certificates, tickets, and other valuables to express their gratitude for your participation. After donating blood, you walk out with high pride and some cute incentives at hand!

8. It’s free. The best things in life are free and donating blood is one of them! When you donate blood, you don’t only become healthier and you haven’t just saved a life, you also get to do these life-changing acts without spending a dime! How is that for a treat?

Donating blood is as not as scary as you might think. A prick of the needle can come a long way. After all, donating blood is a win-win situation both for the donor and recipient.

Now that we know the benefits of donating blood, we must practice this act of altruism as often as we could and encourage others to do the same as well. This June 14, 2012, the world will celebrate the World Blood Donor Day (WBDD) and for this year, South Korea will host the global event. It’s a global campaign and there are over seventy countries around the world that will give honor to the voluntary donors who choose to help other people by donating blood.

We are thankful to the blood donors – first-timers and regular donors alike– who selflessly share their time and effort in giving blood and saving lives. But we should not stop there. The campaign against blood shortage must continue and let us all be an instrument in spreading the word about blood donation.

A bloodmobile is a self-contained donor clinic on wheels. It is usually as big as a bus that is equipped with collection stations where you can donate blood in a comfortable environment. All bloodmobiles are only allowed to operate should they pass the regulations created by Food & Drug Administration (FDA).

How a bloodmobile looks like

An ideal size of a bloodmobile is 33′ long and 12′ high. Its exterior is embellished with colorful paints and excerpts to attract attention. Inside, all areas – may it be for registration, for refreshments or for collection – should be open and inviting. The entire area must be air-conditioned and odorless. The registration area must have two tables of six-foot in size with four chairs in each. One is for the registrar and the other one is reserved for the donors (for examination). Close to the registration table is an outlet for computer and a printer.

The refreshment area should have a long table and chairs. All snacks and drinks are served here. Another important area of a bloodmobile is the rest room. Rest rooms should regularly be cleaned to avoid the spread of infection. For safety, there must be a separate rest room for males and females too.

New-released mobiles have an entertainment area. It’s helpful to have a TV set in the collection station. Donors will not get bored during the procedure.

Why organize a bloodmobile

Reason #1: It’s easy to organize. It only requires minimum effort.

Organizing a bloodmobile requires smaller area compared to a donation drive. Only a small budget is needed to improve the exterior and interior areas.

Reason #2: Bloodmobiles can be scheduled to avoid unnecessary breaks in work.

Bloodmobiles can collect more blood units. It can arrive in two to three establishments in one day.

Reason #3: More donors can easily be motivated.

Bloodmobile is parked outside the office. There’s no need for qualified donors to travel just to give blood.

When to organize a bloodmobile

Christmas – Any statistics can prove that the blood supply in Yuletide season is declining. Many people are in shopping malls while some are in vacation.

World Blood Donor Day (WBDD) – WBDD is celebrated every June 14th. More than seventy countries give honor to all voluntary donors who give blood for altruistic reasons. The 2012 WBDD will take place in Seoul, Korea.

Easter Sunday – This day marks the resurrection of Christ. It’s miles better to celebrate it by giving a pint of blood to save three lives.

Birthday – Convincing people to donate blood makes your birthday extra special.

How to organize a bloodmobile at work

Begin the entire process by working with a local blood bank, which owns a mobile.

It’s important to thoroughly examine the entire area months before the donation day. Then, it’s time to gather your team and start setting goals.

Confirm the participation of all potential donors. Inform these potential donors about the schedule and motivate them by giving tips on how to prepare before the donation day.

If the budget allows it, distribute posters or campaign flyers. To make the invitation more personal, send a customize template via their email addresses or invite them through Facebook Event.

On donation day, arrive at the site early. The ideal parking space for bloodmobile should have no tight corners and narrow spaces. The space has to be near the building but steps away from any doorways and windows to avoid disruption. A bloodmobile is operated by diesel generator.

Prepare all the necessary equipment. Have a checklist and examine every little detail (the pen and papers in registration, the collection materials, the donation chairs, the waste baskets, the comfort room, the refreshments, the souvenirs, etc). The goal is to make every area as clean and as inviting as it should be.

Acknowledge their presence the moment the donors start to gather outside the mobile. Let them feel comfortable by directing them to the registration area.

Remind each donor about the real purpose of blood donation. Inform them that anyone can give blood at least three times each year.

<g:plusone size="standard" count="1" href="http://bloodbanker.com/plasma/plasma-donation/10-easy-ways-to-organize-a-blood-drive/"></g:plusone>

One pint of blood can save three lives. In a group of 10 people who donate blood, 30 lives are saved. Imagine how many more lives are saved if there were 50 or 100 or 200 people donate. One truth that people do not realize is that blood is not manufactured, it comes from generous donors. Though not everyone can donate blood, there are still eligible donors who are fit to give blood- the problem is just a small percentage of eligible people are donating. In the United States, about 38% of its population is eligible to donate blood, but only 5% of them across the country actually do.

Donate blood today!

To keep blood stock supply on a safe level, the American Red Cross, other hospitals and blood banks are actively campaigning for blood drives across the country to continually meet the growing demand of blood supply. The good news is, even ordinary people like you can help these organizations spread the news about blood donation. You can organize blood drives in your place, encourage locals to donate blood and make a change.

Here’s how:

1. Partner with a local blood bank. You can not organize a blood drive without any blood bank to give the blood bags to. Wherever you are, contact and form partnership with American Red Cross or the nearest blood bank in your place and tell them that you want to organize a blood drive in your community. They will be your source of safety gear, equipment, forms and other things needed to collect and document extracted blood.

2. Choose a place. Look for a location where you can hold the blood drive. It is better if it’s a busy area where people converge; like the school gym, community center, church hall, fire station, at your office, apartment building, etc. If blood drives are held in busy areas, chances are, passersby can easily see your activity and they might want to donate blood on the spot, too.

3. Decide for a date and time. If you want to have a successful blood drive, give yourself enough time to prepare for this activity. It is impossible to think of a blood drive today and want to have it done by the next week – you won’t have enough donors for that. Make sure that there are available nurses and equipment on your chosen date. It would be best if you hold it on a holiday or any special events in your place so that more people would be available on that day.

4. Recruit helping hands. Since you can’t organize a blood drive all by yourself, you’re going to need some help from people who are willing to get involved in the event. Ask your friends, neighbors or workmates to help you and assign them in specific tasks such as publicity, providing snacks and setting up the place.

5. Look for blood donors. Make sure you recruit donors who meet the requirements to be a whole blood donor. They must be 17 to 65 years old, must weigh at least 50kg and must be in good health. You can invite your workmates, church mates, classmate and neighbors. You can set up booths in schools and parks to inform people about the blood drive event and ask them to donate blood. Having an idea of how many people to expect will help you prepare properly.

6. Follow-up donors before the blood drive. Many people sign up for blood donation but fail to show up on the day itself because they either got busy or they simply forgot. To avoid this, send a text message or an email a day or two before the blood drive to remind them. A study conducted by the students of University of Arizona shows that sending text messages or email reminders to people who have volunteered to donate blood increases donor turnout by 11%.

Promote blood drive through Facebook and Twitter

7. Promote the blood drive. Spread the word about your blood drive online and offline. Post posters about the blood drive in public places but remember to ask permission from the building’s manager. Distribute flyers whenever you can. Have word-of-mouth advertising through your friends. Ask local radio stations to make a public service announcement about your blood drive. Actively update people about the blood drive online using social media networks like Twitter and Facebook. A lot of blood donation and requests for blood donor activities have been successful because these two sites are very effective in spreading information – use them wisely.

8. Provide directions and instructions. If you have blood donor volunteers who are not familiar where your blood drive is, posting arrows pointing to the location would be helpful. When blood donor volunteers arrive at the place, make sure you greet them warmly and explain instructions carefully. Post also instructions in public halls or bulletin boards so that donors can read what to do in case they forgot what you told them.

9. Be friendly and accommodating during the donation process. Have an interview desk set up and have them fill out a form for their medical history. Donors may get cold feet and have second thoughts, make sure to help them feel at ease. Have a person who can usher people to meet with the nurse who will get your vital signs and take a blood sample. Assure everyone that the blood extraction is performed by professionals who are trained to perform the process- a person could get antsy if they are not assured that . The staff must be friendly and accommodating to give donors a relaxed environment.

10. Provide entertainment/foods/incentives during and after the process. The blood donation process only takes less than an hour, but people will spend an hour in at the event because of the testing for eligibility before the donation and rest after donation. To keep the whole process fun, you can have donors watching movies while giving blood. A sitting area should also be provided and make sure to give them snacks and drinks!

Doing a life-saving act is memorable and gives donors ‘bragging rights’ for heroes. A simple token of appreciation like a t-shirt, bar pins, gift cards that say “I saved a life today” or “Give Blood. Give Life” can encourage people to donate again. This is one way to thank them for their act of heroism.

Blood transfusion is important in saving lives and improving health; it would be unfortunate that patients who gravely need transfusion do not have timely access to safe blood. The sadder news is, the world is experiencing blood shortages because of increased number of people who need blood in complex operations such as chemotherapy, organ transplants and heart surgeries. These operations need large amounts of blood and blood products.

We cannot just let helpless people die because of blood shortage. That is why there is a great need to initiate and conduct blood drives to keep the supply coming.

World Blood Donor Day

Whoever you are – a medical personnel, professional or a student – you can help create a change in the world. You can hold blood drives in your place and save lives.

The world will celebrate the World Blood Donor Day (WBDD) every 14th of June. It’s a global campaign and there are over seventy countries around the world that will give honor to the voluntary donors who choose to help other people by donating blood.

We invite you to be a part of this noble act! You do not need to die to become a hero.

Giving blood is simply enough.

<g:plusone size="standard" count="1" href="http://bloodbanker.com/plasma/plasma-donation/nhs-appeals-to-uk-citizens-to-help-prevent-blood-shortage-before-olympics/"></g:plusone>

Without the blood transfusions, she could have died. Lucy Sarsby, an 11- year old patient stricken with an inherent blood disorder called Beta Thalassemia major, has been receiving regular blood transfusions of red blood cells since she was a toddler. Her parents couldn’t imagine how life would have been if not for blood donor.

Without the massive transfusion, he could have died. David Copes was rushed tot he hospital with 41 fractures and internal injuries with the least hope of living. He wouldn’t have made it if not for the 40 strangers whose blood donations were in the hospital’s supply.

Without available blood, she and her daughter could have died. Nicola Grantham received blood transfusion during an emergency caesarian while giving birth. She knows how it feels to have life saving blood running through her veins and wonder how many people took the time to donate their blood.

They are among few of the thousands of people who needed blood and have benefited from blood transfusions in United Kingdom and around the world. Every day, a lot of people depend on someone else’s blood for survival, and somewhere in the world people lose their lives everyday because of blood shortage.

Shortage of Blood

A blood shortage is the scenario the National Health Services (NHS) in London want to avoid this summer. The Olympics will be held in the nation and it would mean an influx of people from participating countries flocking to London. With the string of festivities scheduled this coming season, NHS appeals for extra blood from blood donors to prevent a potential crisis in supplies before June. The contingency plan against blood shortage is to get as much donations so that people like Lucia, David and Nicola won’t have to deal with the dreadful consequences of blood shortage.

NHS said that blood stocks need to be 30% higher to be able to cope with the foreseen increased number of people during the Olympics.

Summer in London will be full-packed as major events like Olympics, Jubilee Celebrations and Euro Football Championships take place. People will have their schedules set for these occasions and the NHS said they should collect sufficient amount of blood before everyone else in town gets busy.

Jon Latham, assistant director for blood collection and spokesperson of NHS Blood and Transplant said that they have lot of evidence that blood collection is harder during sporting events.

He further asked blood donors for support and said, “This year we have a unique situation and need the public’s help to counterbalance the inevitable dip in donations as people celebrate a memorable summer for the country. People get distracted doing other things and don’t make their appointments.”

“Every unit of blood saves or improves the life of three people. We obviously want to make sure everyone enjoys the Games, and want to make sure that if there are any accidents we have the blood supplies to help them recover quickly,” Latham added.

The Great Need for Blood

The Great Need For Blood

Hospitals in England and North Wales need 7,000 units of blood per day but sadly, only 4% of people who can donate blood do so and 230,000 new donors are needed each year to meet the demands of blood. Blood is needed in a lot of medical situations, from women giving birth who lose blood to treating injured people in accidents and long term illnesses to helping those undergoing surgery.

The demand for blood is rising and the NHS appealed to people to sign up now rather than later in the year. Donors of all blood types are needed but in particular those with B negative, O positive and O negative.

<g:plusone size="standard" count="1" href="http://bloodbanker.com/plasma/plasma-donation/non-invasive-anemia-testing/"></g:plusone>

The World Health Organization estimates the anemic population to be 2 billion, 50% of which is attributed to iron deficiency. Every year, 1 million people die due to anemia and nearly 40% of maternal deaths are caused by this disease. In fact, anemia is a major cause of deaths in childbirth in many places across the world. The statistics are alarming because anemia is preventable and curable. Many lives could have been saved and unnecessary deaths should not have happened.

This cruel problem was witnessed by Myshkin Ingawale, a co-founder of the Indian med tech company Biosense Technologies, when he visited a doctor friend in Parol, India. His friend, Dr. Abhishek Sen, who was delivering a baby at that time, greeted him with a sad news that both the mother and baby died during the labor. According to Dr. Sen, the mother died of “post partum hemorrhage”, a severe internal bleeding due to undiagnosed anemia.

The mother in Parol who lost her life was not the only one in this case.

Thousands of women in India die during childbirth every year because of insufficient access to any kind of hemoglobin screening during pregnancy, a standard procedure for checking iron levels in blood to diagnose anemia. Many of these women did not undergo testing for anemia several months into pregnancy and consequently risked having pre-term, stillborn, or low-weight babies.

Here’s another problem: though anemia is curable with medicines, not everyone is diagnosed to have one.
It’s not that easy to test anemia. Basically, you take a blood sample of the person and run it through a machine called Coulter Counter that costs around $10,000. This machine is available in developed countries and most cities in the world, but other under-developed areas in the world haven’t even seen this. Ingawale knew there has to be another way to bring help to these poor places.

“I come from an engineering and consulting background so it struck me that there had to be a business solution for a disease that impacts millions of women and children in South Asia,” Ingawale said.

Driven by his bold vision and compassion for helping people, Ingawale, a self-proclaimed lover of brainstorming and building things, together with his engineer and doctor friends, decided to prevent more maternal deaths by building a machine that could easily measure blood count, requires no needles and pricking, and most importantly, a portable gadget that health workers in rural areas like Parol can carry anywhere with them.

The intent was noble, but the journey towards building the promising device was not easy. His team built and failed for 32 times, and finally last year, they successfully built ToucHB Quik, a device that measures hemoglobin, oxygen and pulse rate.

It is only as big as an iPod Classic, so it’s very handy. It’s simple to use: just insert the clip into your finger, turn the switch on, and after 20 seconds, the value of hemoglobin, oxygen saturation and heart rate are shown on the little screen. It’s definitely a blood-free blood test.

How it Works?
Ingawale explained in Ted Talks conference this year how the device works. “You might have seen a little light inside of it. In fact, there are three lights in there, three wavelengths of light. And we essentially pass light right through the tissue, and from understanding how much of it is transmitted, how much of it is scattered and how much of it is absorbed, we can figure out how much hemoglobin is there in the blood. And this is something which is based on a principle called photoplethysmography,” the 28 year-old co-founder of Biosense Technologies said.

How Significant is ToucHB Quik to the Community?
Anemia is a major killer among people of all ages, and the team at Biosense aims to put an end to deaths caused by this disease by early diagnosis. ToucHB Quik is a prick-free blood hemoglobin measurement device that would heavily reduce pain and blood loss encountered when testing for hemoglobin. Aside from giving instant results, ToucHB Quik is non-invasive, inexpensive, portable and runs on battery, which makes it an ideal and convenient tool even for a semi skilled health worker to bring and make tests for anemia-stricken communities.

The company hopes this technology will be used in developing world where cost and access is limited. In Ingawale’s presentation in Ted Talks, he expects that the rate of death from anemia in the world will be gone by 2020.
