Genetic Mutation on Blood Type: Real or Fiction?

Intriguing as the title may be, this article touches on mutations- the genetic kind. Though I am not a scientist, this is a topic that piques one’s interest. This won’t hurt one bit, I promise. Medical technology has found ways to be able to break down and piece together the mysteries involving our body. Allow me to open this article by telling you that understanding the significant relationship between genetic mutation and blood type is complex, yet I will do my best to make it an easy and informative read for you. Scientists took years and years of research before they figured out the relation between blood type and mutations. Let’s begin the discussion with the basics – starting with the term genetic.

What does Genetic mean?

Experts constantly say you are you because of your genes. Your genes are the reason why you’re blonde, brunnette, raven haired or red head. This is also why you look more like one of your parents- your genes say so. A living organism, be it a human, a plant or an animal, is made up of genes. It is the basic hereditary unit that builds and passes along specific traits to offspring (News-Medical, 2012). Genetics, simply put, is the in-depth and scientific study of genes and heredity.

What is Mutation?

Mutation is an irreversible change on a DNA sequence of a gene.

To be able to understand mutation, we’ll need to know the basics on why this involves our DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid). This is  a complex acid and every DNA molecule in our cells forms a chromosome. 

Our DNA is a pattern that is used to build various parts of a cell. The DNA looks like a long-chain ladder of molecules that scientist call the double helix. The ladder rungs are the building blocks of a cell also termed as nucleotide bases and these are adenine (A), thymine (T), guanine (G) or cytosine (C). With only these 4 these genetic materials the DNA gives off instructions that are carried out by ribonucleic acid or RNA.

Genetic + Mutation: The Relationship between Gene & Mutation

Our DNA is a string of nucleotides that build a person’s genetic structure. In simple analogy, a gene is like a spaceless sentence of the nucleobases (letter form:A,T,G and C).

Pretend this sentence is a genetic string:


Dividing this per nucleobase, you come up with the separate words that make a sentence:

My nose is bigger than yours because my genes say so

A genetic mutation would render this sentence differently:     

My bigger nose than yours because my say genes so

In DNA-speak, the gene is each word of the sentence that makes up the DNA sequence of a gene. When a letter is deleted and each letter moved down a step to the left, there is a noticeable change.

In the world of science, genetic mutation occurs in one in a million living organism in the world. Some genetic mutations are considered normal variations of DNA, these are called polymorphisms. These are responsible for the differences we have in eye color, hair color, height, blood type etc. 

Blood Type and Genetic Mutation

Blood type is simply defined as a classification of your blood that is based on the presence or absence of inherited substances (Wikipedia, 2012) and Karl Landsteiner was a popular Austrian physician who discovered four types of human blood type – these are O, A, B and AB.  It’s believed that each blood type has its own personality traits and diet routine to follow.

You may ask: Is there a relationship between blood type and genetic mutation? The answer is yes but before I’ll give you any further details, take a look at the diagram below:

The diagram above is a representation of what a genetic familial inheritance. Clearly, an offspring with blood type A is from both parents who are blood type A. Only a genetic mutation in rare cases make it possible to have an offspring with a blood type other than the types of both parents. There is a group of genes (known as allele) that can result to different variations. It means it’s possible for you to have an A blood type even if neither of your parents have A type allele.

This rare genetic mutation occurred in Japan in 1997. A mother with a B-type delivered a baby with A-type while the father’s blood type is O. Because of this rare occurrence, the father was initially informed of not being the biological father. Further testing involving other DNA markers of both child and father finally proved that the child was indeed his. 

DNA has always existed, it is only in 1952 that DNA was confirmed to have a vital role in heredity.

Genetic mutation in blood types occurred in the early era of human history. Blood type O is the primary blood type and through the years as man explored the Earth and was exposed to different climates and natural resources other blood types started to exist. Given the variable diet, weather and atmosphere something unusual happened to the type- which mixed with antigens that developed from a red blood cell precursor.(Journal of Creation, 1997).

I admit, the mutation that mentioned in this article may not be as interesting as an X-Men comic book or movie. But isn’t it fascinating that our bodies can develop mutations with the slightest change to our DNA sequence?

    I am 22 and I think I have this genetic mutation, I discovered recently that my blood type is AB+ while my father and mother are O and A positive respectively, we thought I was switced at the hospital and did a dna test and turned out the dna says I am their full child. I was wondering if there is anything dangerous or something I should do about this or is it just normal like the japenese family?

      As I see it, there’s nothing wrong or dangerous about your situation. But you need to undergo testing for the second time to satisfy your curiosity.
