Have Fun While Saving Lives

Do you get bored easily?

Blood donation is a worthy cause yet boredom is probably one of the reasons why 15% of non-donors do not want to give blood. The most common misconception is that blood donation takes more than half of their day. People consider sitting back and doing nothing while your blood fills up a bag is torture and not much fun at all.

We say otherwise! Entertaining yourself while giving blood is the solution to boredom “phobia”. First timers should go with a couple of friends or family to pass the time away with. Here are some other suggestions to spice up your donor session …

Try: Going in as one of the vampires in Twilight

Scruffy hair-waxed hair and a bit of glitter will do, you can also throw in a pair of fake canines too. Who says role playing can’t be done in a donor center?!

Try: Mumbling to yourself as your bag is filled

You may have to do this a couple of minutes until a nurse or phlebotomist asks if you are okay. When they do, give them a big grin and tell them you were testing how attentive people are at blood donation centers.

Try: Taking deep breaths (close to hyperventilating)

Volunteers or phlebotomy trainees are bound to get concerned and would go up to you to see if you’re alright. Assure them you are and tell them you plan to audition for the next SAW movie.

Try: Make small talk

There are centers that have volunteers or interns who get credits for on the job training. You can take it a little further if they’re cute and your type, might as well strike up a conversation while lying there with your blood dripping in a bag.

Try: Betting your buddy that you can fill your bag faster than him

You just got to be hooked up at the same time though. I think there are no restrictions on how many of your cookies you can bet – there’s always a lot of them after you donate blood.

Try: Say you’re giving 2 pints

Let them in on the joke if they start explaining it too seriously. Phlebotomists need to lighten up sometimes, eh?

Try: Pretend to faint

WARNING: This gag is for the bold hearted. It would be a  sight to have a grown man swoon and faint. Anyway be prepared to have a hearty laugh and own up to pretending.

Try: Asking why the bag looks like it’s twitching

Nurses, phlebotomists and volunteers are always there to answer questions. This will be out of the norm but it’ll get their attention alright.

Doing a good deed like sparing a pint of blood shouldn’t take the fun out of everything. Every one  deserves a good laugh once in a while besides it is a way to make the good deed more interesting. .

  1. I am looking for a site for platelet donation since I find plasma donation stressful during the summer months.

    • @JudyBramble Have you tried googling it? By the way, most plasma and blood centers, which you’ll find in this directory http://www.bloodbanker.com/banks, also conduct a procedure on platelet donation. The American Red Cross says that “you’re allowed to donate platelets “every 7 days, up to 24 times per year.” Platelet donation is pretty similar with plasma donation. It requires the use of apheresis machine in which the other components are returned back in your system.
