I was deferred because I was sick. When can I come back?

Usually temporary
Quick answerBeing turned away because you were unwell is a short pause. Once you have recovered and feel well, you can usually donate again.

What this deferral usually means

Centers wait until you are over an infection so that donating is safe for you and for the patient who receives your blood.

What to ask the center

Ask whether your specific illness or any medication you took has its own waiting period.

When you can try again

Usually once you have been symptom-free and feeling well, often a few days after a cold or flu.

Set a return reminder

Prepare for your comeback

  • Wait until your symptoms have fully cleared
  • Finish any antibiotic course for an active infection
  • Eat well and hydrate before you return
