Platelet Donation Academy
Why platelets matter
Platelets are the cells that help blood clot. Patients who cannot make enough of their own depend entirely on donors.
Who platelets help
Cancer patients, transplant and surgery patients, people with blood disorders, and trauma victims all rely on platelet transfusions.
Why the need never stops
Donated platelets last only about five to seven days, so centers need a steady stream of donors every single day of the year.
What the appointment is like
A machine collects platelets and returns the rest of your blood. You relax in a chair, often watching a show, for about 2 to 3 hours.
You can give often
Because platelets are replaced quickly, you can donate every 7 days, up to 24 times a year.
What to say when you call a center
Hi, I'd like to donate platelets. Do you collect platelets at this location, what is the time commitment, and what appointments do you have this week?
