What is a first platelet donation like?

Quick answerPlatelet donation uses a machine that collects platelets and returns the rest of your blood. It takes longer than whole blood, often 2 to 3 hours, and platelets are needed constantly.

How it works

Blood is drawn, a machine separates out the platelets, and the rest is returned to you. You may feel a slight cool sensation or tingling, which staff can ease.

The time commitment

Plan for around 2 to 3 hours. Bring entertainment and settle in. Many platelet donors watch a show during the visit.

Why it matters

Platelets last only a few days, so the need never stops. They are vital for cancer, surgery, and trauma patients.
