What actually happens when you donate blood?

Quick answerA first whole blood donation takes about an hour from check-in to snack, and only about 10 minutes of that is the donation itself.

The short version

You check in, answer confidential health questions, get a quick mini-physical, donate for about 10 minutes in a reclining chair, then rest with a snack for about 15 minutes.

Everything is sterile

All needles and collection equipment are sterile and used only once, then discarded. You cannot catch anything from donating.

You are in control

You can ask questions, take breaks, and stop at any time. Telling staff it is your first time is the best way to get extra support.
