What is a first platelet donation like?

Quick answerYour first platelet donation is calm and well supported. You relax in a chair while a machine collects platelets and returns the rest of your blood. Plan for 2 to 3 hours and bring something to watch.

Before you go

Eat well, hydrate, and avoid aspirin for about two days beforehand, since it affects platelets. Bring a snack and entertainment.

During

You may feel a slight cool sensation or mild tingling, which staff can ease. Tell them if anything feels off. You can pause at any time.

After

Rest with a snack, keep hydrating, and take it easy for the day. You can give again in as little as 7 days.
