Can I donate blood if I have sickle cell trait?
Trait is not the disease
Sickle cell trait means you carry one copy of the gene. It is different from sickle cell disease, and most people with the trait are healthy and can donate.
What may differ
Some donation types, such as certain red cell donations, may be handled differently for trait carriers. Whole blood is generally fine.
Ask the center
If you know you carry the trait, mention it. The staff will tell you what you can donate that day.
Blood matching is complex. Similar ancestry can increase the chance of compatibility for some patients, but compatibility is determined by blood testing.
