I was deferred because of travel. When can I donate again?

Usually temporary
Quick answerSome destinations carry a temporary waiting period, most often travel to a malaria-risk area. The pause ends on a known date, so it is easy to plan around.

What this deferral usually means

Certain regions carry infection risks that are not part of routine donor testing right away, so a wait is used as a precaution.

What to ask the center

Ask exactly when your waiting period ends based on the countries and dates of your trip.

When you can try again

Commonly three months after returning from a malaria-risk area. Other destinations may have shorter or no waits.

Set a return reminder

Prepare for your comeback

  • Note the date you left the area you traveled to
  • Confirm the end of your waiting period with the center
  • Set a reminder for that date
