Does donating blood hurt?

Quick answerMost people feel a brief pinch when the needle goes in, then little or nothing for the rest of the donation. Many say the worry beforehand was worse than the donation.

What you feel

A quick pinch at the start, similar to a routine blood test, then a mild sensation or nothing at all while you donate.

If you are sensitive to pain

Tell the staff. They can position your arm comfortably, talk you through it, and check in often.

Afterward

Your arm may feel slightly tender where the needle was. A bandage and a short rest are usually all you need.
