The Central California Blood Center has been serving the San Joaquin Valley for more than 50 years. The Blood Center is responsible for the drawing, processing and distribution of blood and blood components in Fresno, Madera, Mariposa, Tulare and Kings counties. It is also the sole provider of blood and blood products for the 31 hospitals in these areas. To meet the needs of the Central Valley community, CCBC must collect between 5,000 to 6,000 pints of blood a month. The Central California Blood Center (CCBC) first opened on June 8, 1955 as the Central California Blood Bank (CCBB). The location was in a remodeled home in Fresno, California, with a small technical staff which included two registered nurses, two laboratory technicians and a recording secretary. Eventually, CCBB became a big business and ran short of space. The Blood Bank had moved to a new location, and in 1995, changed its name to Central California Blood Center (CCBC). CCBC had expanded into the South Valley in 1983 with the opening of the Visalia Donor Center on Mooney Boulevard. Then, donor centers in Porterville and North Fresno followed. Now, the Blood Center has expanded with a new corporate site, The Jenny Eller Donor Center, which is located at Blythe and Herndon in Fresno. A member of the American Association of Blood Banks, CCBC has been designated as a regional blood banking center. It is also licensed by the US Food & Drug Administration and a member of America's Blood Centers, North America's largest network of non-profit community centers, which collects half of the US blood supply.
