Michigan Community Blood Centers, now known as Michigan Blood, is the sole provider of blood and blood products for dozens of Michigan hospitals in regions surrounding Grand Rapids, Flint, Midland, Saginaw and Traverse City. Founded in 1955, Michigan Blood is an independent, nonprofit community service organization committed to ensuring a safe and adequate blood supply that will serve the needs of communities in its service areas. The Blood Center collect more than 135,000 pints of voluntarily donated blood annually through donor centers and mobile blood drives. In addition to its blood donation program, it also offers other life-saving, blood-related services such as support for marrow and stem-cell transplant patients and their families, marrow donor registry, DNA tissue typing, transfusion medicine consultations and the state's pioneer program for collecting blood from the donated umbilical cords of newborn infants, Michigan's first Cord Blood Bank. As a member of America's Blood Centers, Michigan Blood is part of a network of community blood banks spanning North America and providing about half of the US blood supply.
