The Ochsner Blood Bank is the primary blood supplier for the Ochsner Health System, a non-profit, academic, multi-specialty, healthcare delivery system dedicated to patient care, research and education. In 1939, Dr. Alton Ochsner, along with four physicians - Guy Caldwell, Edgar Burns, Francis LeJeune and Curtis Tyrone, established Ochsner, the first multi-specialty group practice in the South.
The Ochsner Blood Bank’s mission is to provide an adequate and safe blood supply for the hospitals and communities it serves. It currently supports over 85 percent Ochsner's blood needs and provides blood and related products to Ochsner Medical Center, Ochsner Health Center - Kenner, Ochsner Health Center - West Bank, Ochsner Baptist Health Center, Ochsner St. Anne General Hospital and Lady of the Sea General Hospital in Cut Off. In addition, Ochsner Blood Bank also participates in blood-resource sharing with other local community hospitals. Today, Ochsner has grown to be the largest private healthcare system in the region, with 7 hospitals and more than 35 neighborhood health centers throughout southeast Louisiana. |
