Founded in 1974, Virginia Blood Services (VBS) is a private, nonprofit organization headquartered in Richmond, Virginia and is the supplier of lifesaving blood to all hospitals in Richmond, Charlottesville, Farmville, Fishersville, Emporia, Harrisonburg, Hopewell, Petersburg, South Hill and the Staunton/Waynesboro area. It employs more than 280 people and annually conducts more than 2,700 blood drives and collects nearly 130,000 donations. VBS operates eight donor centers: two in Richmond and two in Charlottesville, along with others in Chester, Glen Allen, Fishersville, and Harrisonburg. Aside from supplying blood and blood components to 22 hospitals, Virginia Blood Services also caters to numerous dialysis centers and home health care agencies in the larger central Virginia area. It provides the blood for nearly two thirds of the patients receiving organ transplants in Virginia. VBS, in partnership with the National Marrow Donor Program, has facilitated marrow or stem cell donations for more than 100 patients. VBS is a member of Americas Blood Centers and the AABB (formerly the American Association of Blood Banks). It receives excellent inspection reports from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and Medicare.
