Founded in 1964, the New York Blood Center (NYBC) is one of the nation's largest non-profit, community-based blood centers. For more than 40 years, NYBC has provided the community with the highest quality transfusion products and services, as well as leading-edge research, technological and medical care innovation, and education in the field of transfusion medicine. It relies upon a staff of 2,000 volunteers and a much smaller permanent staff in order to supply over 200 hospitals in New York and New Jersey with a source of whole blood, platelets and hemoglobin. The New York Blood Center has locations in the New York City boroughs of Staten Island, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and The Bronx, as well as in Long Island, the Hudson Valley and New Jersey. The New York Blood Center plays an important role in promoting community health. It interacts with up to 2000 blood donors each day to provide life-saving blood products and clinical and transfusion services. NYBC operates a variety of programs in concert with other medical facilities and health care providers, including a partnership with Hemophilia Services Consortium, Inc., which involves providing over 1,500 hemophiliac patients with constant medical support, clotting agents and transfusions. It is also home to the National Cord Blood Program at the Howard P. Milstein National Cord Blood Center, the world's largest public cord blood bank, and the Lindsley F. Kimball Research Institute, which includes more than a dozen research laboratories that study the prevention and treatment of blood-related illnesses.
